The Literacy Council of Northern Virginia seeks a full-time (40 hours per week) Director of Volunteers to advance the mission of the Council by recruiting, screening, placing, and conducting on-going management of volunteers. This extensive volunteer management position requires a Bachelor’s degree, two years of professional volunteer management experience, exceptional attention to detail, superior written and verbal communication skills, strong computer skills in Microsoft Access, Word and Excel, patience, and a sense of humor. The position also requires developing external relationships, public presentations, and some evening and weekend hours. The Literacy Council of Northern Virginia seeks a full-time (40 hours per week) IT Specialist to manage the organization's data input, website, reports, and ensure data integrity. Responsibilities include primarily programming, troubleshooting connectivity problems, performing backups and restores, and executing data entry in LCNV's Access database and the state- approved SSWS data system which encompasses all program data. This position will also be responsible for managing the technology infrastructure and security of data and information pertaining to the organization. A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or Management Information Systems required as well as two years of professional experience. Experience with LANS/WANS, Windows Server environment, Microsoft Small Business Server, Internet Information Services, backup systems, Microsoft Access and/or other database software, network/workstation peripherals, programming in Visual Basic, VBScript, JavaScript, HTML, Cascading Style Sheets, and the ability to implement technological alternatives to streamline processes and improve productivity is also required. The Literacy Council of Northern Virginia, in partnership with Loudoun Literacy Council in Leesburg and BEACON for Adult Literacy in Bristow, generally begins recruiting AmeriCorps members in March of each year. The service term is one year, from early September to mid-August. Our AmeriCorps members serve as lead classroom instructors for adult beginning learners of English, teaching the basic skills of reading, writing, speaking, and understanding English in order to enhance their employability and empower them to participate more confidently in their communities. At BEACON, the member will also serve as case manager for job placement of students. Members are fully trained to teach up to three classes at different sites throughout northern Virginia, to supervise volunteers and collaborate with partners at the sites, and to participate substantively in organizational management of the literacy councils. A car is required; mileage beyond normal commuting distance is reimbursed. During the period of service, AmeriCorps members receive a living allowance of $15,400, payable in bi-weekly allotments, plus an education award of $5,350 from the Corporation for National and Community Service upon completing 1,700 hours of service.
