The Literacy Council of Northern Virginia seeks a Basic Literacy Tutoring Specialist in adult education. This 35-hour per week position requires advanced knowledge in education, particularly with learners who have reading and writing difficulties. Position requires building external relationships, working with community partners, and supervising volunteers. Excellent administrative, organizational and communication skills essential. Teaching experience helpful. Masters degree in Education or related field preferred. Flexible hours and some week-end work required. The Literacy Council of Northern Virginia, in partnership with Loudoun Literacy Council in Leesburg and BEACON for Adult Literacy in Bristow, is recruiting AmeriCorps members for a service term of one year, beginning in early September. Our AmeriCorps members serve as lead classroom instructors for adult beginning learners of English, teaching the basic skills of reading, writing, speaking, and understanding English in order to empower them to participate more fully and confidently in their communities. Members are trained to teach three classes at different sites throughout northern Virginia, to supervise volunteers and collaborate with partners at the sites, and to participate substantively in organizational management of the literacy councils. A car is required; mileage beyond normal commuting distance is reimbursed. During the period of service, AmeriCorps members receive a living allowance of $15,000, payable in bi-weekly allotments, plus an education award of $5,350 from the Corporation for National and Community Service upon completing 1,700 hours of service. As of early June 2010, we are recruiting in particular to fill an AmeriCorps member position at BEACON for Adult Literacy in Bristow, Virginia. This position entails ESOL instruction for adults, with a particular focus on job readiness. The AmeriCorps member will both teach ESOL and serve as a case manager for students, guiding their job search. Full training is provided.
