The Literacy Council offers paid employment and internship positions in addition to its many volunteer opportunities. While paid employment always offers compensation, internships do not always provide a salary or wage, though sometimes they may.

AmeriCorps members

The Literacy Council of Northern Virginia, together with our neighboring partner Loudoun Literacy Council (see www.loudounliteracy.org), is recruiting AmeriCorps members for the 2008-2009 service year, which begins late August/early September 2008. Our AmeriCorps members serve as lead classroom instructors for adult beginning learners of English, empowering students to become more active citizens. Members are trained to teach three classes at different sites throughout northern Virginia, to supervise volunteers and collaborate with partners at the sites, and to participate substantively in organizational management of the literacy councils. A car is required. During the 10-12-month period of service, AmeriCorps Members receive a living allowance—up to $14,800—payable in bi-weekly allotments, plus an education award of $4,725 from the Corporation for National and Community Service upon completing 1700 hours of service. Learning Centers Lead Teacher

Part-time (about 6 hours/week)
$16.50 per hour

Responsibilities

Design lesson plans and teach classes twice each week (2 hours per class) to adult ESOL learners.
Act as first point of contact between volunteer teachers at the site and the Program Director. Provide information and support to volunteer teachers as needed.
Complete administrative tasks and submit required documentation for the site.
Assist with class registrations and student assessments.
Find and support substitute teachers when assigned teachers cannot make scheduled classes.

Desired Skills and Characteristics

Passionate about literacy and teaching English to adult students.
Ability to motivate and teach speakers of other languages (the ability to speak a foreign language is NOT required).
Must be willing to attend professional development workshops and pre-session staff meetings.
Ability to work independently within the guidelines and structure of the Literacy Council programs.
Fluency in English.
Dependability and flexibility.
Prior ESOL teaching experience and/or educational background preferred.

FLP Lead Teacher

Part-time (6 hours/week)

Responsibilities

Assist with class registrations (Teachers CAN pre test new students but CANNOT post test students)
Develop lesson plans
Maintain class records (attendance and checklists)
Assist in facilitating bi-weekly parent and child involvement activities
Complete semester project with students
Administer Teacher Assessments for each student
Administer Student Survey at end of each semester
Manage volunteers
Contact Program Director (week in advance) with planned absences and try to find substitute
Attend class field trips, teacher meetings and continual adult education trainings
Undergo Teacher Observation (probably once every two years but this depends on the size of the Program)

ESOL Lead Teacher Internship

Part-time (6 hours/week)
Unpaid internship

The intern will be responsible for teaching either one intensive class four evenings a week or two non-intensive classes that will take place on two mornings and two evenings each week. The classes will take place at one of LCNV's Northern Virginia class sites determined by the staff and intern together. The intern will serve as the lead instructor, while supervising volunteer teachers and providing program and administrative support. A curriculum and textbook will be provided. Training will also be provided. The intern will be required to attend a classroom teacher training program provided by the Literacy Council as well as a session regarding how to give the Basic English Skills assessment test.

Responsibilities

Assist with student registration at the beginning of the class session
Teach one intensive or two non-intensive beginning level adult ESOL classes for the duration of one 12-week class session
Plan lessons and prepare class materials
Supervise class volunteers
Administer student goal and skill assessments
Maintain student class attendance, progress records and database records
Provide ESOL Coordinator with program and administrative support such as:
- Making phone calls to prospective volunteers
- Organizing student profiles, class attendance lists, and exit surveys
Assist with other related activities as needed

Organizational skills and creative thought process
Ability to work independently and take initiative
Ability to coordinate and motivate volunteers and adult students
Flexible schedule and the ability to work evenings
Working knowledge of instructional technology

Working Relationships
The intern will report to the ESOL Learning Centers Program Manager. He or she will also have direct contact with all Literacy Council staff members, including the Executive Director. The majority of the intern's time will be spent working with students and volunteers.

Lead Children's Teacher

The Literacy Council of Northern Virginia is seeking to employ part-time lead Children’s Teachers for its Family Learning Program. Teachers will be responsible for conducting literacy-related activities with children while their parents attend English class two nights a week.

Required Skills

Previous teaching experience and/or a B.A. in education.
