 Arlington County's support has afforded the Literacy Council the flexibility to grow in ways that best meet its students' needs. In addition to supporting the Council's four learning programs, Arlington County has also provided funding for general operating expenses. This type of funding, free from being apportioned to any one program or set of programs, is very sought after and allows the Council to allocate funds where they are needed most.
In 2008, Arlington County also provided critical early support to LCNV's Supplemental Programs Initiative, which, among other things, established conversation classes where current and waitlisted students could gather to practice their literacy and English language skills under the guidance of trained volunteers. Arlington County itself offers a number of regularly scheduled adult education courses into which LCNV students often matriculate upon graduating from the Literacy Council's beginning level curriculum. |
