Since 2006, the Herb Block Foundation has partnered with LCNV through its Pathways out of Poverty program. Through Pathways out of Poverty, the Foundation funds projects that may include in-school and community-based educational programs, after-school activities, and mentoring programs. For projects serving adults, The Foundation funds proposals to provide literacy education and GED preparation, and to offer vocational training and job placement.
Executive Director Jean Rickard says, "Our Foundation supports programs that lead to 'pathways out of poverty' and literacy is key for everyone at every age. Literacy can knock down barriers and open doors to employment and further educational opportunities and that is why we support the Literacy Council of Northern Virginia."
When Herb Block died in October 2001, he left $50 million with instructions to create a foundation to encourage the art of editorial cartooning and to support charitable and educational programs that help promote and support the causes he championed during his 72 years of cartooning. The Foundation is committed to defending basic freedoms, combating all forms of discrimination and prejudice, and improving the condition of the poor and underprivileged. In addition, the Foundation seeks to provide educational opportunities through scholarships, and to promote editorial cartooning through continuing research.
