Support from the Virginia Literacy Foundation has helped the Literacy Council expand its capacity to provide its programs. In 2007, VLF support enabled LCNV to hire a full-time student records manager. As the Virginia Department of Education and other funders increasingly demanded student performance outcomes and other data, this addition to the staff was critical, as it freed the program directors from their mounting data entry and analysis responsibilities and allowed them to re-focus their attention on program development.
The Virginia Literacy Foundation was established in 1986 in order to provide funding and other forms of support to community-based literacy organizations throughout the Commonwealth. Early in its existence, VLF formed a partnership with Virginia Department of Education's Office of Adult Education and Literacy to address the socio-economic and other consequences of illiteracy in Virginia. It was the first public-private partnership of its kind in the nation.
