As the Literacy Council grows, it becomes more important to stay in contact with our stakeholders: people just like you. And because we strive to direct as much of our funding as possible directly to our programs, we try to maintain that contact as cost-efficiently as possible. This second ever of our online-only newsletters, which you're reading right now, is a good example. Money that would have been spent on printing and mailing is now being allocated to our programs. More such developments are in the works.
We're currently working on moving some of our volunteer training materials online so that those interested in volunteering can at their own convenience attend an orientation that normally would have been hosted in real-time at a physical location to which they would have had to travel. This saves time for volunteers and money for the Literacy Council. We're also developing social networking capabilities through the use of free sites such as twitter.com, which will allow Literacy Council stakeholders to stay up to date on LCNV happenings on a daily basis. We already have a profile page on Facebook.com and maintain hundreds of photos of LCNV events on Flickr.com. If you already have a Facebook profile, then consider becoming a fan of LCNV. If not, consider joining. It's free. You'll be updated on photograph uploads from recent events and other LCNV-related news.
Becoming familiar with new technologies such as these can sometimes seem daunting. Don't worry—you're not alone. A good number of LCNV staff are relatively new to these technologies as well. We're all in this boat together, and we're confident that their deployment will help all of us—volunteers, teachers, students, board, and staff—keep in better contact with each other. We'll let you know when we've established these functions and then provide information about how to use them.
A new development that won't require any effort to enjoy is the release of our new promotional video, being put together with the help of 5:00 Films. We'll be making it web-accessible so you can view on lcnv.org.
