Changing of the Guard

by Patti Donnelly

The beginning of a new fiscal year is generally when LCNV transitions members and officers on and off the board of directors. The end of this fiscal year, 2010, marks the completion of six years of service of board member and current Board Secretary Mark Troppe. Mark has served in many capacities in his six years and helped strengthen communications, fund development, and governance. His tireless commitment and dedication was evidenced by his presence at nearly every special function of the Literacy Council, beginning with the first Taste of Literacy event in 2003. Long-time tutor trainer and board member Marykate Dougherty also left the LCNV Board after five years of service, two years of which she served as Board President. Fortunately, Marykate is still an active member of the LCNV Basic Literacy Tutor Training Team, a position she has held for over twenty years. Finally, Cathy Morris, also completing five years of service on the LCNV Board as our fund development expert, left this year to move to Palm Beach, Florida with her family. We very much appreciate their contributions and will greatly miss their leadership.

In July, we welcomed Nancy Burns, Ed Choi, Nancy Needs and Sally Jaggar. Sally returns to the LCNV Board after three years away; her prior service began in 2001 and she served for six years in fund development, strategic planning, human resource management, and as board secretary. Sally will bring fundraising and governance skills to the board and will add historic knowledge, so helpful as we prepare to celebrate 50 years in service.

Ed Choi is the Vice President & Global Managing Director for Verizon Emerging Industries. He has worked throughout the IT and telecommunications industry and has connections up and down the Dulles technology corridor. Since LCNV's learner population is migrating toward the western suburbs, strengthening our connections and visibility in that region is critical to our continued effectiveness. Ed will bring corporate development, strategic planning, and financial management expertise to the LCNV Board.

Nancy Burns is the Vice President of First Citizens Bank. She first came to the Literacy Council as the Assistant Vice President, Not-for-Profit Division with Commerce Bank, which became TD Bank. She is experienced in nonprofit management, corporate giving, and financial management. Nancy was instrumental in securing TD Bank's sponsorship of LCNV's Annual Meeting and Award Ceremony for two years running and for their continued support of Reading: A Family Affair. Nancy is also a Basic Literacy tutor.

Nancy Needs is a dedicated professional and Lean/Six Sigma Black Belt experienced in fostering collaboration between stakeholders in multiple settings using Lean and Six Sigma principles. She has worked in strategic planning and program performance evaluation, has served on nonprofit boards and is currently active in the Crystal City Pentagon Rotary Club. Nancy will bring fund development and marketing experience to the LCNV Board.

Elected for their second two-year term are board members Cathy Vivona and Judy Yoder. Finally, the new board officers for the coming year are: Mary Ann Nocerino, President; Kitty Porterfield, Vice President; Paul Byrne, Treasurer; and Peggy Balsawer, Secretary. Congratulations to all and thank you for your time and service to the Literacy Council.
