The Literacy Council of Northern Virginia was saddened to learn of the passing of Mary Evelyn "Evie" Bane earlier this year. Ms. Bane was a long-time donor to LCNV but did not keep in direct contact with the staff. Unfortunately, we did not learn of Ms. Bane's passing until we received notice from her estate attorney that she had left a bequest to support LCNV's continued work.
We were not able to speak with Mary's family to learn more about her, but we did learn through her obituary in the Pontiac Daily Leader that she was a retired U.S. Marine. She was the first woman officer to graduate from the Armed Forces Staff College in Norfolk, and she became the first woman officer to be assigned to command a unit comprised principally of male Marines. She was an active volunteer with several D.C. area organizations.
We are deeply touched by Ms. Bane's generous gift and humbled to see the impact in the world that one person can have, not only during his or her life, but long afterward as well.
