Philip L. Graham Fund's Support Crucial to Upgrading LCNV's Computer Network

by Matt Kollmeyer

A recent grant from the Philip L. Graham Fund has helped the Literacy Council implement mission critical updates to its information technology systems. Until a few months ago, LCNV's ten year-old local area network server was deteriorating to the point of frequent failure. When it was operational, the server allowed staff to share and store files and to query the database that contains tens of thousands of student attendance records and test scores among other data. However, the system's progressive deterioration left LCNV staff without quick and reliable access to this database, rendering them unable to make mandatory reports to our donors and partners and to assess statistically the impact of our educational programs, which is vital if we are to focus program development ever more closely on student outcomes.

Thankfully, support from the Philip L. Graham Fund has enabled the Literacy Council to replace its ailing server with a new one and to make other upgrades to its local area network. Now, staff can once again easily share files and access the database.

It's not always immediately apparent just how important information technology is to the mission of the Literacy Council, but when that capacity falters, fixing it quickly becomes a matter of the utmost urgency. Our sincere thanks and gratitude to the Philip L. Graham Fund for granting the Literacy Council the resources needed to get the job done.
