Last November, the Burke Rotary Club kicked off the first training session for Literacy Council students and tutors with the Computer-Assisted Literacy Solution (CALS). The Rotary Club is committed to literacy and has funded a pilot program for up to twenty students to use CALS; the twenty slots filled quickly. CALS is an internet-based program with many different learner levels. Users can log in to it at any computer with an internet connection; they don't have to download any software or go only to designated computer labs. The Council students for whom it is most appropriate are our basic literacy learners who are comfortable with computers.
Rotarian Mary Wharton led the training, assisted by Travis White and Fred Kalema-Musoke. Eleven tutors and students came to the training, which had been rescheduled due to technical difficulties and the upcoming holidays. Attendees learned how to log in to the program and then took a test to place them in the right level of CALS.
We will schedule further trainings in the future. If your student is interested in CALS, please contact me, Rebekah Bundang, at 703-237-0866 ext. 105 or at basiclit@lcnv.org. I will contact you if slots become available.
