December 1st saw LCNV's annual holiday party with an evening that offered something for everyone. Attendance was high once again. More than 200 people showed up to enjoy some great food, music, and each other's company. Students, tutors, and teachers provided a wonderfully international buffet: pupusas, naan, dorma, lo mein, tres leches cake, cookies, and a big sheet cake were only a few of the delicious dishes available. And not for the first time, members of the philanthropic group Single Volunteers of D.C. helped with everything from setting up, serving food, supervising the crafts, and even cleaning up.
While guests enjoyed the foods, Giovanny Romero, his wife, and young daughter provided the evening's musical entertainment. The highlight was 8 year old Nicole Giovanna singing holiday carols. The crowd responded with applause. When she sang "Hear Comes Santa Claus" there was a faint jingle of bells in the air and Old St. Nick appeared to spread good cheer. Children were invited to join him at his special chair for a surprise. Even some adults didn't want to miss a photo opportunity with St. Nick. Americorps members Courtney Pergal and Minta Trivette helped Santa pick a special book and a candy cane for each child.
As adults continued to enjoy some socializing, children enjoyed making pipe cleaner ornaments and cards with best wishes to the servicemen and women overseas. There was even a raffle with the lucky ticket holders receiving Barnes and Nobles gift cards. What a wonderful way it was to ring in the holidays.
