LCNV Honored with James B. Hunter Human Rights Award

by Matt Kollmeyer

LCNV has received the 2009 James B. Hunter Human Rights Award for its efforts toward bringing about equality of opportunity to everyone in our community. The award ceremony was held on December 10th, National Human Rights Day, in the Arlington County Board Room. Each year, the award is bestowed in three categories: individuals, businesses, and nonprofits. This year's other honorees were the Arlington Food Assistance Center; Elizabeth Wildhack, Esq.; and the Reverend Madeline Jervis. The Arlington Human Rights Commission gives these awards in memory and honor of James B. Hunter, who served on the Arlington County Board from 1990 until 1997 when he retired for health reasons. The next year, he passed away from cancer at age 58.

An Arlington native, Mr. Hunter was also a retired Marine Corps major and a businessman. During his tenure as a County Board member, he advocated human rights for everyone in his community. He is remembered particularly for championing the rights of disabled persons and in 1992 helping to pass an anti-discrimination amendment to Arlington's human rights law. A big congratulations to all the students, volunteers, partners, and donors of the Literacy Council of Northern Virginia for all your hard work and dedication. This award is yours.
