The Literacy Council of Northern Virginia is fortunate to have a committed group of professional leaders who volunteer their time to guide the organization. The LCNV Board of Directors give an incredible amount of time and use their professional skills to further our mission and strengthen our vision. The LCNV by-laws permit two-year terms that can be renewed up to a limit of six years total service on the board. As a result, the composition of the board changes from time to time.
In the past three months, we have added four new members to the Board of Directors and said good-bye to one. Pragati (Peggy) Balsawer joined the board in October. Peggy currently works for the Federal Housing Finance Agency, but she brings years of experience with international law firms as a corporate lawyer representing multinational and US banking clients in mergers and acquisitions, securities compliance, and business regulations. Grace Klinefelter is fairly new to the Northern Virginia community moving here from Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Grace is an adult educator in higher education, currently serving as associate professor and program chair, Business and Organizational Leadership at Argosy University in Arlington. Kiranjit Dhillon by her own admission is "a numbers person." Her passion for literacy and education comes from ten years with Reading is Fundamental serving as a chief financial officer, though for the past two years she has been with Booz Allen Hamilton as a lead contract manager. Kitty Porterfield is a communications specialist. She worked as the director of communications for Fairfax County Public Schools for ten years, and prior to that appointment, held the same position with the Alexandria City School for five years. Kitty has also served on several community service boards throughout the region and brings a wealth of leadership experience to LCNV. The new board members bring a range of new professional skills and leadership to the LCNV Board.
Sadly, the six-year term limit requires the transitioning of dedicated colleagues and dear friends off the board. The Board of Directors said good-bye to Joan Dodaro, who brought organizational management, human resource management, and strategic planning skills to the board. Under her guidance, LCNV improved its internal management systems, revised and updated personnel policies and evaluation procedures, and created and implemented a three-year strategic plan. Because no one ever leaves the LCNV family, Joan will stay active as a volunteer serving in other capacities.
