Become a Family Learning Volunteer

The Family Learning Program has a variety of volunteer opportunities. If you are interested in any of the positions below, please contact the Director of Community Outreach at (703)-237-0866 or volunteers@lcnv.org.

Volunteer Class Teacher

Part-time (6 hours/week)
Responsibilities include:

  1. Assist with class registrations (Teachers CAN pre test new students but CANNOT post test students)
  2. Develop lesson plans
  3. Maintain class records (attendance and checklists)
  4. Assist in facilitating bi-weekly parent and child involvement activities
  5. Complete semester project with students
  6. Administer Teacher Assessments for each student
  7. Administer Student Survey at end of each semester
  8. Contact Lead Teacher (week in advance) with planned absences
  9. Attend class field trips, teacher meetings and continual adult education trainings
  10. Undergo Teacher Observation (probably once every two years but this depends on the size of the Program)

Volunteer Class Aide

(4 hours/week)
Responsibilities include:

  1. Assist classroom teachers by modeling activities, pulling students aside and working with them individually for extra help, etc.
  2. Teach class when either of the teachers need a substitute.

Children's room volunteer

This person will help facilitate cognitive, physical, social and emotional development in the children and therefore should have experience in this area.
Responsibilities include:

  1. planning and facilitating activities,
  2. supervising group playtime,
  3. reading age-appropriate books,
  4. assist in the planning of parent and child activities along with the lead ESL instructor and program coordinators,
  5. distribute age-appropriate books each semester,
  6. disciplining when necessary and
  7. encouraging positivism and creativity.

Student Assessment Specialist/Test Administrator

Student Assessment Specialists administer verbal and written assessments to students during the registration and post-testing phases of each trimester in the Learning Centers and Family Learning programs. This is a great opportunity for volunteers who want to work directly with students but can't make extended time commitments.

This position requires approximately 30 hours of volunteer time over the course of one year. This includes approximately 4-6 hours on a monthly basis (testing phases are typically scheduled 8 months out of the year).

Testing sites are located throughout Northern Virginia. Daytime and evening testing opportunities available.

Training is required. Interested volunteers can attend a training workshop held at the Literacy Council office in Falls Church. Directions can be found at http://lcnv.org/contact.cfm.

Substitute Teacher

Substitute Teachers instruct classes when assigned teachers are unable to teach. Substitutes indicate their site and scheduling preferences.
