Classroom Employment/Internship Opportunities
The classroom-based programs have several types of paid positions and internships. The programs can also accommodate students who wish to receive college credit for their service, if appropriate. Positions include:
FLP Lead Teacher
Part-time (6 hours/week)
$16.50/hour
Responsibilities include:
- Assist with class registrations (Teachers CAN pre test new students but CANNOT post test students)
- Develop lesson plans
- Maintain class records (attendance and checklists)
- Assist in facilitating bi-weekly parent and child involvement activities
- Complete semester project with students
- Administer Teacher Assessments for each student
- Administer Student Survey at end of each semester
- Manage volunteers
- Contact Program Director (week in advance) with planned absences and try to find substitute
- Attend class field trips, teacher meetings and continual adult education trainings
- Undergo Teacher Observation (probably once every two years but this depends on the size of the Program)

Learning Centers Lead Teacher
Responsibilities include:
- Design lesson plans and teach classes twice each week (2 hours per class) to adult ESL learners.
- Act as first point of contact between volunteer teachers at the site and the Program Director. Provide information and support to volunteer teachers as needed.
- Complete administrative tasks and submit required documentation for the site.
- Assist with class registrations and student assessments.
- Find and support substitute teachers when assigned teachers cannot make scheduled classes.
Desired Skills and Characteristics:
- Passionate about literacy and teaching English to adult students.
- Ability to motivate and teach speakers of other languages (the ability to speak a foreign language is NOT required).
- Must be willing to attend professional development workshops and pre-session staff meetings.
- Ability to work independently within the guidelines and structure of the Literacy Council programs.
- Fluency in English.
- Dependability and flexibility.
- Prior ESL teaching experience and/or educational background preferred.
Salary:
- $16 per hour -- Lead teachers are typically paid for 6 hours per week (4 hours of instruction plus 2 hours prep time), although this can vary per site.

Lead Children's Teacher
The Literacy Council of Northern Virginia is seeking to employ part-time lead Children’s Teachers for it’s Family Learning Program. Teachers will be responsible for conducting literacy-related activities with children while their parents attend English class two nights a week.
Required Skills:
- Previous teaching experience and/or a B.A. in education.
- Must be willing to attend professional development workshops and pre-session staff meetings.
Desired Skills and Characteristics:
- Creativity.
- Flexibility.
- Curriculum development experience a plus.
- Passionate about family literacy and family involvement.
- Bilingual a plus.
- Knowledge of children's books.
