Can you imagine if you were unable to read this website, a street sign, directions on a bottle of medicine, or even a note from your child's teacher? Have you ever wanted to make a real difference in the life of an area adult? By volunteering with the Literacy Council, you can change the life of adults who want to develop the basic reading, writing, and English speaking skills necessary to be successful members of our communities.
Last year, the Literacy Council of Northern Virginia succeeded in educating over 1,800 adult students, who are striving to better their lives. We were only able to help this many people because we have so many hard-working, dedicated volunteers. Last year over 1,200 volunteers donated more than 31,000 hours of service—an average of 84 hours of volunteer service per day!
You can help by volunteering to tutor an adult one-to-one, teach in an ESOL classroom, act as a class aide, work in our computer lab, help out in our office, or volunteer for our special events. You can make a difference in an individual's prospects, a family's opportunities, and a community's future.
